In 1735, freedom of the press in America won an important victory as a jury acquitted John Peter Zenger of the New York Weekly Journal of a charge of seditious libel brought by the royal governor of New York.
In 1790, a U.S. naval task force known as the Revenue Cutter Service was formed. It would later become the Coast Guard.
